København

aka Copenhagen

Home to fine Danish design (which is just.. design here), the world's best restaurant, modernity and relaxation.

Copenhagen, the Danish jewel of the Baltic, is a city where aesthetics and gastronomy entwine seamlessly. Beyond its reputation for impeccable design, it offers a modern atmosphere and a sense of relaxation that's hard to find elsewhere.

One of the most unique ways to explore Copenhagen is by boat. While many cities can be seen on foot, this city, crisscrossed with canals, is an opportunity to float through the city’s waterways. Cruise through for a different perspective of this city’s charm.

Copenhagen is famous for its culinary scene, and seafood takes the spotlight. For all the meat lovers, it is time for a meat-hiatus. Center all your meals around the fresh bounties from the ocean and lakes (but make no mistake; Copenhagen still knows how to do meat exceptionally well).

One neighborhood that captures the city's essence is Kødbyen. Industrial grit, cement and raw on the surface (read “circa 2010 Bushwick” vibe). Originally a meatpacking district, the cobblestone streets now play host to an array of laidback restaurants and bars.

This district is also home to Kødbyen Fiskebar, and make sure you have a spot reserved. It was so good, it ruined me. Living in Berlin, why can’t seafood and fresh fish be on my mealtime agenda? A culinary journey featuring fresh scallops, halibut, langoustines, razor clams, with a fresh baby gem salad in the mix. And these are just the appetisers. For the mains, get the catch of the day.  A meaty monkfish spooned generously in a well of butter. A Turbot fish so delicate and flavourful. Unfairly coined the #uglyfish, it provides such joy.

Oh, and if you're into Danish craft beer, check out Mikkellar Warpigs for a taste of the local brew. The only thing that makes the word “beer” better is the word “craft” next to it.

Venture further through the city, and you'll find Christianshavn, a neighborhood that defies conventional definitions. Known as the "free state of Christiania" or the Green Light District, it's a place teeming with life, from hashish stalls to lively music and crowds. Beyond the crowds, an unexpected sanctuary awaits along the waterfront. Enjoy the relaxing views of the calm waters and the… towering incineration plant. The Danes can make an architectural wonder out of anything.

The towering Amager Bakke or CopenHill is a waste plant with a rooftop of wonders  - fixed with a ski slope, a climbing wall to scale the 80m high structure making it the tallest artificial climbing wall in the world, and a grassy picnic rooftop to enjoy the views. Who said waste has to be boring?

Breakfast and boating can be a good combination in this city, with a start at Lille Bakery, a haven offering fresh focaccia, fried duck egg with chili, sausage rolls and Danish pastries that are pure indulgence. It's slightly off the beaten path, but need I say sausage rolls again? Tuck in, and then tuck some takeaways in your bag, head to GoBoat rental and sail through the canals prepared with a good picnic basket.

Feeling a bit more tapas style? Stop over at Dumpo. I am all for romantic dinners. However, dinners with big groups do have an advantage. More people = more food you can order = more food you can taste. Simple math.5 people, 10 dishes later. Overall, Dumpo passed the test. The roasted carrots, stracciatella and beef croquettes aced the test.

And let's not forget the vibrant Torvehallerne market. With 80 different stalls, there's something for everyone.Local cuisine, specialty foods, craft beers, and an array of delectable treats await. Don't miss the iconic Smørrebrød, a famous Danish open-face sandwich. Grab one of those a beer from Mikellar, kick back in the lazy chairs, and let that Danish sun shine on you.

Copenhagen.

It is a design forward city. It is an easy going city. It is an expensive city. It is an active city.

Keep traveling with an open mind and an empty stomach.

Skål!

Special thanks to our wonderful friends Oliver and Marie for showing us how the locals do it.
